Who Then Is This?

“On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” — Mark 4:35-41

When storms arise, we often react the same way that those in the boat with Jesus did. We take an honest look at our circumstances and we ask the Lord, “Do you not care?” The truth is of course he does! And that is why he calmed the storm, because he cared for their lives just as he cares for ours today. May the Lord speak to our storms in our life in ways that only he can saying, “Peace! Be still!”

Heavenly Father,

During the storms of life, sometimes I wonder if you care. Do you know my pain? Can you understand my troubles? Do you care that we are perishing? And when I read that Jesus did care when his disciples cried out to him, I was reminded that you do care. You care more than anyone else can. Help me to remember this when difficulties arise, so that even before you speak peace over my situation, I will already have your peace in my heart. In Jesus Name, Amen!

How does God speak peace into your life?
